beforme.jpg

All those future parents who want to listen to the heartbeats of their unborn kids in the comfort of their own homes might just have their wish fulfilled if the product concept “Beforme” sees the light of day.

Designed by Elżbieta Madej and Robert Majkut, Beforme is a stethoscope with a built-in MP3 player that can play back the heartbeats of an unborn child. While the embryo-shaped Beforme allows the mother to listen in to the heart rhythms on the MP3 player at the touch of a button, it also displays the beats in a graphical form on the display. In addition, the recordings can be downloaded on to a Computer via USB or Bluetooth and then sent to a doctor for examination.

Call that the most utilitarian gift that you can give to a pregnant woman. The product is still in the prototype (embryo) phase.

A couple of years ago, I reported on a great organization called the Adaptive Design Association, which uses inexpensive materials to make custom furniture for kids with disabilities. The best thing about ADA is that they help children through smart design. They also offer classes on topics like basic cardboard carpentry.

Like many non-profits in the current economic climate, the ADA is feeling the squeeze, as allow funding is drying up. This great organization is at risk of closing without the help of concerned people who believe in its mission. If you’re curious to learn more about ADA, check their gallery of projects, and there is also a page for donations.

We’ve long been huge, big fans of the on the internet shop Dynamism, home of the newest and greatest technology products from Japan so it’s with huge excitement that we’re helping to announce the opening of a new store by the founder, Douglas Krone: Gizmine. Gizmine is also full of the latest products from Japan, but instead of focusing on bigger ticket items like notebook computers and amazing phones, Gizmine has everything from cool cell phone straps to unique clothing (knife-proof shirts!) as well as the usual tech suspects like cameras, watches, and speakers. Even cameras, though, aren’t the same ones you’ll find anywhere else.

This Tomy Xaio Digicam is a cute, compact 5 megapixel digital camera, but it has a built-in printer, like an updated polaroid.

stc-wireless-router.jpg

Some people are so obsessed with beauty, it seems. Take the STC Wireless Router from Saudi Telecom, for example. Now how attractive could a wireless world wide web router get ? Pretty much eye-catching, is what one would conclude looking at this one.

The uniqueness quotient ? The router not only sports the regular wireless world wide web, Voice over IP, land-line telephone and wired DSL but also doubles up as a flower vase. According to the designers, the ratinale behind this exclusive design came about because “Saudi Telecom was in need for a one-of-a-kind router design that would provoke a positive emotional response“. Some thinking, that. It might require a bit of re-conditioning for most folks to get used to a wireless router that looks good as well, but then who wouldn’t want to use some harmless camouflage to spruce up a gadgety interior ?

Charlie Anzman and Allen Stern from InformationWeek has written about Hulu eating into YouTube’s lunch. In their argument, YouTube might have had 700000 viewers during their live event but Hulu showing “real world” shows have millions of viewers.

In an excerpt: So why do I believe Hulu will eat YouTube’s lunch? Easy, Hulu is where the ad dollars will go. If I look back to my days buying millions of dollars worth of media and you asked me which service I’d rather be associated with, the answer is easy… Hulu. The real question for brand marketers is where is the ideal likelihood for user engagement with my advertising. Viewers of Fred or Justine on YouTube aren’t going to interact with on the web advertising the same way a mainstream Internet user will. In fact, I’d argue that most YouTube viewers aren’t going to interact with any on the internet advertising.

In fact, on the internet video creators are going to have to work even harder to get brand ad dollars going forward. They’re now competing with the biggest stars, movies, and TV shows across all time. Buying ads on Hulu is simple and the viewers are there. There will be ad dollars for on the web video creators, they will just have to hustle for it more than was expected just a couple of years ago.

Charlie Anzman has a good post today on the second reason that Hulu will beat YouTube. He calls it the “real world” factor. Anzman notes, “I spend some (much more lately) of my time in the ‘real world’. I occasionally miss a TV show that I enjoy and I can sit back with my wife anytime and watch that missed episode. It’s really that simple. Hulu’s simple and simple interface is great … and we usually discover something else after.” It’s that “something else after” factor that keeps you hooked to Hulu way more than you’ll ever stay hooked to YouTube. Hulu also offers a never-ending selection of television programming and full-length movies.

Hulu might be showing “real world” shows; but what’s stopping YouTube from organizing their videos and putting more structure that grants “real world” shows on them. Also, they have the audience and potential to create a new kind of celebrity world that could translate into “real world” fame.

blackberry%20storm.jpg

Egad, we haven’t mentioned the BlackBerry Storm yet. In case you’ve been on Mars, the Storm is RIMM’s long-awaited just-released entry into the touch-screen phone market, available only with Verizon.

This will be is a shock to BlackBerry devotees, but the Storm is the first BlackBerry without a real keyboard. Instead, like the iPhone, its keyboard is virtual–only the Storm has a technical twist that’s supposed to give you something like a real keyboard tactical experience.

Walt Mossberg, the Wall Street Journal’s fabled technology columnist, is lukewarm about the innovative keyboard and startled at the Storm’s lack of wi-fi, but he likes the Web browser. Find his All Things Digital review and a video here, and a Fox network video commentary here.

Fred Figglehorn is YouTube’s newest star and is being played by 15 year old Lucas Cruikshank. He’s a highschool freshman from Nebraska who plays the web comedy series and has earned the distinction as YouTube’s most subscribed channel of all time.

He says that he always liked Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller and Will Farrell and he wanted to be an actor. He feels that his geographic location hinders him from becoming an actor, but YouTube grants him to continue his dream.

In an excerpt:

“I’ve always liked Jim Carrey, Ben Stiller and Will Farrell. My favorite movies ever are Zoolander and Blades of Glory,” states Cruikshank. “I’ve always wanted to be an actor or a movie star, but I figured that’s probably not going to work out because I live in Nebraska.”

But thanks to his huge online audience, Cruikshank is overcoming geography. He’s already taped a guest-starring spot in Nickelodeon’s iCarly that’ll air next spring, has a Fred T-shirt line in the works, and flies to L.A. for network meetings about future projects.
