A new study from ABI Research forecasts the number of viewers who access video via the Web to nearly quadruple in the next few years, reaching at least one billion in 2013.
Sure, 2.5 billion people watched Princess Di’s funeral on TV — but anyone who calls a seventh of the world’s population in five years a “niche” market is just stupid.

I don’t believe Giovanny Gutierrez’s claim that this clip of his “girlfriend” playing with a Wii Fit is a “personal video”. He’s Director of Interactive Media at Tinsley Advertising, and he posted the video on a YouTube account named tinsleyadvertising. That “girlfriend” is Tinsley Advertising employee Lauren Bernat.
I don’t know if Lauren is actually Giovanny’s girlfriend, and I don’t care. This is either a paid ad, or a thinly veiled pitch.
Nevertheless, I don’t mind watching Lauren shake her ass. Mr. Gutierrez may not understand the long-term value of authenticity in online video, but he sure knows what gets our attention in the short term.

If you need any more proof that the MPAA’s “antipiracy” attack dogs injured innocent people, look no further than this. Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback reports that a denial of service attack — a cybercrime — that took down his business for two days was committed by none other than Media Defender, an MPAA “antipiracy” watchdog.
Revision3 produces on the web video shows, their most famous being Diggnation. They publish their content — quite legally — via BitTorrent. Apparently, Media Defender’s systems are programmed to put fake trackers on BitTorrent servers, and attack those servers if caught. That’s exactly what happened to Revision3.
Of course, some idiots might say Diggnation’s just some stupid World wide web show. Fighting piracy is more important than some stupid Internet show, they might say. In response to such idiocy, may I quote Jim Louderback:
If it can happen to Revision3, it could happen to your business too. We’re simply in the business of delivering entertainment and information – that’s not life or death stuff. But what if MediaDefender discovers a tracker inside a hospital, fire department or 911 center? If it happened to us, it could happen to them too. In my view, Media Defender practices risky business, and needs to overhaul how it operates.
Copyright trolls think the need to protect their work gives them the right to hurt the innocent. Louderback says the FBI is now on the case. Let’s hope those Media Defender dogs finally pay for all their cybercrimes.

Weezer frontman and songwriter Rivers Cuomo is a geek. That’s why the video for their latest single, Pork and Beans, features YouTube stars and memes.
Kevin Nalts points out that the lyrics fit the independent spirit of on the web video. Check out the chorus:
Imma do the things that i wanna do
I ain’t got a thing to prove to you
I’ll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if i make a scene
I ain’t gonna wear the clothes that you like
I’m fine and dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and I’m tickled pink
I don’t give a hoot about what you think
Previously, the Barenaked Ladies featured YouTube stars in the video for their single, Sound of Your Voice. While YouTube star power felt a bit tacked on to that song, this song sounds far more appropriate. I never thought I’d see Miss Teen South Carolina in such a favorable light… saber.

The other day I was talking to a friend who is buying a new PC. She is buying from Dell, so she was given the choice. Windows XP or Windows Vista?
“Which should I choose?” she asked.
“Just buy a Mac!”
I know there are a ton of “good” reasons not to switch to Mac, but there are a ton more great reasons to switch to Mac. So before I give you my top 5 reasons to switch to Mac, let’s here what you think. And to be fair to the Windows users who may have stopped by, let’s here your top reasons to stick with PC and/or switch to Vista.

For the last several years, the still pretty crappy cameras on my cell phones have been my main camera. Knowing that I have the cam on the phone in case of impromptu photo opps (generally involving my dogs) makes me less likely to want to drag around yet another device. So now I have hundreds of great pictures, or pictures that would be great if they weren’t so low-res and crappy. They’re not suitable for framing or generally even for printing because they’d look like blurs.
Unless… you’re printing with a Polaroid Pogo pocket printer, which prints small, 2″ x 3″ prints with sticker backs that are small enough to look good even with the resolution provided by most phone cameras. Not only that, the Pogo is wireless and inkless, and weighs only 8 oz. Using Bluetooth, you can print directly from your cell phone. The Pogo prints in full color in about 60 seconds. The printer is inkless because it uses Zink photo paper which is covered in heat-activated crystals. Unlike the Polaroid photos of old, which were prone to smearing, Zink photos are waterproof, tear-proof, and smear-proof. The printer works both with a battery or with the charging cable.
The Pogo will retail for $149, and will be available in July at Target and Best Buy.

I’ve the iTrip for my trusty iPod, but have been waiting impatiently for Griffin to develop one for my iPhone, which is constantly running down the battery. Like its sibling, the new iTrip product allows users to play AND control iPhone or iPod while charging its battery. iTrip sends the music wirelessly to a car’s FM radio so the user can listen through the car’s stereo speakers. Ta da!
SmartScan technology makes it easy to find the best three radio frequencies, then saves them automatically as presets for easy recall. If you’re lucky enough to have a newer model vehicle, RDS technology shows song information on RDS-enabled car radio displays.
With AutoPilot playback control, the set of controls are right up front on the power adapter that you plug into your cigarette lighter, and as the adapter features illuminated symbols for Play/Pause and Track Forward/Backward button controls, it’s a snap to use. After a tiny practice you won’t even have to look down since you hear a satisfying tiny “click” when you’ve switched controls.
$99 at Griffin, and worth each cent.
