Star Wars junkies can rejoice - Mimoco, the company famous for its Mimobot series of designer USB drives, has announced the entry of new (read extremely adorable) members into its Star Wars’ collection, named the Star Wars Series 2. Reason? Probably the sell-out success it had on Series 1 – featuring the superlatively famous Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, Chewbacca, etc.

The new series will be shipping in January or February next year and has Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett and Princess Leia (my favorite). The USB drives, available in 1GB, 2GB and 4GB capacities, are priced at $49.95 each. If you don’t want to miss this limited edition, book yours on pre-order right away.

open-it.jpg

I wouldn’t have been able to get it past airport security, but oh, how I needed this Open It package-opening multitool while on vacation last week. Its retractable utility knife, interchangeable dual-head screwdriver, and alloy steel jaws are designed to make quick work of just about any type of packaging, especially those ridiculous hard-plastic blister packs so many gadgets and toys are heat-sealed into these days.

If Open It had been packed into my suitcase, I wouldn’t have had to waste time in my hotel room, snipping my way through a blister pack with a nail clipper and a pair of mini sewing scissors.

Available now with fire orange, berry red, mocha, or sky blue handles for $11. Also Amazon.

black-hole-phone.jpg

I’m not sure who this “Black Hole” phone bag - which promises to cut connection to the network so you don’t receive any calls - is designed for. Folks who can’t figure out how to simply turn their phone off? With 2 slots, a normal slot and the signal blocking slot, I can just see myself habitually putting it in the signal blocking slot. Oops!

100laptop.jpg

I finally got the chance to pop into the Wired Store in Soho, which seems to be an annual event now. If you are looking for futuristic prototypes, you will be a bit disappointed. This isn’t NextFest, but rather, a showcase of products that you can get today. Although the Wii and Guitar Hero aren’t exactly cutting edge, there are a couple of nice inclusions.

I saw my first “One Laptop Per Child,” also once known as the “100 Dollar Laptop.” Developed by the founder of the MIT Media Lab, the mini-computer runs a modified version of Linux and is slated to be distributed to the developing world. Learn more about the “Give One Get One” program that has been extended through the end of the year.

gap-vespa.png

GAP as a brand has been very distracting to me for the past several years. Most recently the crazy neon-powered stripes that decorate GAP storefronts look a lot like American Apparel rip-offs. However, making the most of the crazy neon stripes, GAP has teamed up with Yahoo to sponsor a holiday-themed contest. Create a video greeting and enter to win one of three 2007 Limited Edition Vespa LX 50 motor scooters in a custom Crazy Stripe design by Gap. Each striped scooter retails for $5,999.

Here’s how it goes:
1. You visit this site and create and upload a video greeting,
2. Check “WIn a Vespa Contest” box to register,
3. Register for the contest.

Video greetings must be submitted by December 12th, 2007 and votes must be cast for your favorites by December 16th, 2007.

Entries will be judged based on:
a) have the best audience appeal,
b) be the most creative, and
c) be the most original, will win one of three (3) 2007 Limited Edition Vespa LX 50 in a custom “Crazy Stripe” design by Gap.

See Official Rules for details. If you submit one of the top three, you’ll be a winner!!!

According to PCMag’s Oliver Rist it is. He writes that Apple has made Leopard less stable than Tiger. It’s actually a step in the wrong direction.

To a certain extent, I’d agree. We’ve upgraded one of our Macs to Leopard in the office. However I’m still using Tiger on my Macbook Pro. Why? Coz as far as today is concerned Tiger is still more stable than Leopard. I’m using Adobe apps and not all of them are optimized for Leopard yet. So I don’t want to get into trouble.

Oliver also writes that there are certain missteps in the interface area of Leopard. That’s true. There are some parts that are a step backward but there are also good things.

As a whole I still think Leopard is still a good upgrade once most of the apps are already Leopardized. Read Oliver’s article and let me know what you think.

[via Engadget] AT&T’s CEO Randall Stephenson was heard saying  that the 3G version of the iPhone will set to make it to the store shelves in 2008. I think that’s a given already, don’t you? But a confirmation from the AT&T CEO is a good boost to this.

With the 3G feature what other goodies can the 2nd gen iPhone bring? Methinks that it’s wise decision that I’m still holding out on an iPhone. You can’t believe the proliferation of iPhones here in Manila.

Got an iPhone and not really happy with the stock earphones that came with it? Well fret not, there are a lot of cool earphones in the market. These are my choices. Not necessarily in order.

vibe_duo_apple-nero-450.jpg

1. V-Moda Vibe Duo - I own the V-Moda Vibe earphones, the version without the mic and I must say it’s a great set of earphones. The aluminum finish is good. The sound quality is great. My only real complaint about the Vibe is that the wire got stiff. If the Duo is as good as the Vibe and they just added the voice-in functionality, this is a winner for me. Check it out here.  Duo will set you back $101.

2. Jawbone - This one looks awesome. A marriage between style and technology. I love the design. The outer part matches the contour of your face while the inside is made of medical grade plastic to provide a comfortable fit. One of the nice features of the Jawbone is that it adjusts the volume automatically relative to the ambient noise. It also blocks out all background interference so you can hear the other party clearer.

The Jawbone costs $119.99 and isn’t really bad for a headset this nice.

3. Apple iPhone Bluetooth Headset -  The ultimate in simplicity. True to Apple’s design philosophy the headset design is simple and straight forward. It’s unobtrusive, minimalistic and small. It’s housed in an aluminum casing providing durability. It also auto pairs with the iPhone. Because it was designed specifically for the iPhone, you’re pretty much guaranteed that it will work well.

At $129 dollars it’s the priciest among the three. Then again Apple products do have their premium. Still it’s a great headset. Check it out here.

flamingo-red.jpgflamingo-blue.pngflamingo-pink.jpg

It’s gotten easier to find Bluetooth headsets that fit well and are small enough to go almost unnoticed (behind long hair anyway), but efforts to make them stylish have generally taken the whimsical route, as the results are usually pretty silly looking in my opinion, especially if you’re over the age of 17.

The European Flamingo Bluetooth headsets from CellPoint, which just launched in the U.S., look classier than most “fashion” headsets I’ve laid my eyes on. It lays claim to both comfort and style, by virtue of its lightweight, outside-the-ear-canal design, and its not-too-bold yet not-too-shy aesthetics.

flamingo-worn.jpg

To ensure a perfect fit, the Flamingo’s “EarClick” system comes with 6 different sizes of earpads. It has built-in noise cancellation and directional microphone, and provides 8 hours of talk time, 180 hours of standby time, and a range of 33 feet. It comes in 8 different colors, none of them obnoxious in any way.

Priced between $63 and $76 at various online retailers.
