I feel really bad. The latch on my less than 6 month old MacBook Pro looks severely worn out. The paint/coating peeled showing a very ugly looking latch on my otherwise pristine laptop. My question, is Apple’s build quality going to the dogs?
Now why did I say that? In my own personal experience with the current Macs we have, these are just some of the things that came up. Our 1st Gen Macbook had an issue with the heat sink and the keyboard had to be replaced. It’s a first gen product and sure some issues will crop up. Now my Macbook Pro’s latch had problems with the finish. That’s 2 out of 3 of our Intel Macs that have had build quality issues. The only one left standing is our 17″ iMac Core 2 Duo.
I’m peeved about the latch of my MBP because I did not abuse it. Heck, my laptop is kept in pretty good shape. I hardly take out of my office. It either sits on my desk or I just use it in our living room. I have a home office so in fact, my MacBook Pro has never left my house ever since I bough it. So it was because of abuse, outside elements or what. That’s why I’m pissed. When you buy a $2799 laptop (17″ model) you’d expect some level of build quality.
I fear that while the new Apple products are technologically great, build quality is suffering just to get prices to stay the same. Of course I don’t want prices to go up at the same time I don’t want build quality to suffer. It’s a tough balance I know.
While my latch may be a minor issue to some, it might just be a peak at bigger problems that may arise. Apple, if you’re reading this, please, please build better quality products. I love your products, they have great design and function, I’ve never been as happy with any gadget as the ones I buy from you. I don’t want to stop feeling this way. So….

There are a ton more sites/web pages that chronicle issues like this. Just do a quick Google search and you’ll find them. I’m not sure how Apple compares to other companies in terms of quality. Frankly I don’t care. I just care about Apple.
