This blog entry from Seeking Alpha seems to think so. I for one am still on the fence. However the post makes a lot of sense.

With Steve Job’s health always at the back of the minds of investors and Apple lovers all over, it’s hard not to worry about Apple’s future. Jobs maybe the most important CEO this day. He and Apple are so intertwined that whatever happens to him has a tremendous impact on Apple.

The post discusses some valid points that somehow make for good argument that Apple in the long term will be ok even if Jobs steps down or God forbid dies.

Apple has built a robust product line that no other tech company has. They make the hardware and write the software for their product. They’ve gained significant market share that while taken into consideration the whole Computer market might be massive compared to Apple’s thin slice, it’s now gaining ground and fast becoming one of the biggest personal maker. It’s also created a new platform with the iPhone.

The way Apple has structured its business provides a roadmap that’ll ensure Apple will be here for years to come.

While most of us are not privy to Apple’s succession planning, the company has a good pool of executives that Jobs hired, trained and shares the same vision he does. There are good candidates to choose from. Tim Cook, Scott Forstal are just some people being considered. My personal favorite is Jonny Ive but I sincerely doubt he’ll get the CEO position.

So while I am very much worried about Apple’s future without Jobs, I’m a little bit comforted with what I’ve read and beginning to think that there might just be life after Steve.

Do you think Apple will be ok without Jobs?

Some of these are just too painful to watch. I found myself looking away a couple of different times.

I think the two ideal ones are the guy walking out of the store and the little kid at the basketball game.

So I’ve been toying around with Google Lively, which is by far the friendliest virtual world sim I’ve come across. Lively is Google’s thesis on reinventing social networks.

This is an interesting paradigm - on one end we have the traditional virtual world simulators like Second Life and There that has built community from ground up and expands their reach through external tools such as eCommerce models and social networking apps available outside these worlds. On another end we have Google’s tools ready for use and all you need to do is enter this “virtual world in a browser” to make things happen.

Google Lively is a proof of concept for Social Networking 2.0 - running a virtual world without having to install an application onto your desktop. Lively is eye candy. It’s also a social network and a virtual world and a browser game all rolled into one. Basically, when you go “blog hopping,” you really go hopping with your avatar to each and every room created by users. You can embed your room’s code onto your blog and have visitors drop by almost literally. The room creation tool is very easy to use and you can get something up and running in about 15 minutes just by choosing your room template, adding music, and placing skins. You can also define an avatar for your character who can hop from room to room and socialize.

This is my room island paradise for instance, created for my personal blog.

It is cliche to say that the possibilities are endless for Google Lively. It does make sense to present a new paradigm in social networking and with Google’s tools - monetization, payment gateway, search, and online office suite, it does make sense to maximize these tools into a “fun” place.

As of today, the beta release is still not Mac compatible and only works on Windows XP and Vista via Internet Explorer and Firefox.

And now a guest post from Hilary Evans from Eco Friendly Driver.

At Eco-Friendly Driver, I write mostly on saving gas usage and emissions, but it really doesn’t matter if you’re working to help the environment or your pocketbook. The web offers great resources for drivers who want to save.

Waste less gas with Traffic.com. Find your ideal route with info on road work, and anticipated traffic jams in mind.

Pay less with GasBuddy.com. Do an area search and find the lowest priced pumps in your area (volunteers needed).

Reduce your other car-related expenses with Rideshare.org or Carshare.net. Set up ride swaps or find a local community vehicle ownership program.

Save money when purchasing a new automobile with NADAguides.com. Their current rebates feature helps you find the best prices of the day.

This was an absolute classic so many years ago. It’s still funny.

Who’s a current star you’d like to see read Seuss nowadays?

If you’re a fan of Monty Python and Star Wars it’s probably impossible for you to not like this little movie. Being a fan of both myself I’m surprised this one is new to me as well.

Thanks to Doug Vann via twitter for uncovering this one. It was new to him as well!

road-and-travel-camping-for-beginners

It’s been a great summer this year. My family has ventured out into a new hobby and past time, camping! I’ve been camping a number of times through various times in my life from a kid, to college years and other times. My wife is NOT the camping type and it was my kids first time. I should now say that my wife WAS NOT the camping type, but now she really enjoys it.

I believe the key to camping though is really going with another family and close friends. Our first trip was with three other couples and their families and this past weekend was a weekend with just one of the couples again due to schedules.

Although we do stay in tents and in the “primitive camping” areas of state parks, I wouldn’t say we really “rough it”. We have some serious meals, breakfast being our favorite and that usually consists of biscuits, eggs, sausage & gravy, bacon and pancakes. We have a little battery powered ceiling fan in our tent, but it doesn’t circulate quite as much as I would like, but it does circulate. This weekend we also had our own hot-water shower. I’d say the worst part about our camping experience this summer is that we just did it in the summer, I don’t like being hot when I sleep and it was a little too warm at night for my enjoyment. I’m looking forward to the fall.

If this sounds like fun to you, just do a quick Google search on “camping for beginners” and you’ll get loads of resources. The one I’ve enjoyed the most has been from Road & Travel Magazine. With tips like what to pack, what to eat and what tent to buy, it’s really the basics that will make the difference on your trip. Sometimes the basics just don’t come to mind though, call it over-planning.

The article and website also has some links to other great sites of information:

In this age of adjusting to higher and higher gas prices, I’d also recommend checking out your local state’s resources. We’ve had great experiences at the two state parks we’ve visited so far and look forward to the ones will visit in the future as well.

orkin-pest-threat

We’ve had a bit of an issue in the Bean household the last week or so with some annoying little critters. We’ve had issues with ants crawling all over our kitchen counter and getting in our cat food bowl as well. My son’s room has been infested with flying ants too. At first we thought they were termites, but we found out some information on the Internet about how to determine if they were flying ants instead of termites. Wheew!

We actually just got back from camping this past weekend and it was nice (but sad) that we had less issues with bugs outside than we did in our own house the week before.

Sounds like time to do something to me. Tonight while working on some other things I saw a commercial for Orkin that directed you to their Pest Threat website. I did.

After a few quick questions about your house and situation, they allow you to send your information to Orkin for someone to get back to you, which is obvious, but also gives you some nice information about the various insects you may have to worry about based on the answers to your questions and your geographic location.

I’m hoping since I responded to the ad I can get some good pricing on having them take care of our issues. If you’ve got some insect problems of your own, you might want to give their website a try, even if it’s just questions that make you think about your own situation a little deeper, as well as the insects you may be dealing with in your own home.

green-capsule.jpg
green-capsule-views.jpg

Not the first time we’ve seen plants in little bubbles that you dangle from a keychain or cell phone, but this one is a little more fun because the plants are vegetables that you can transplant into a real garden once they reach a certain size. To grow cabbage, sweet basil, cherry tomatoes, or bell peppers, you put little seeds with water and soil into this teardrop-shaped clear capsule, wait a week for the seeds to sprout, then plant in a larger pot or garden. Made by Masaki Environmental Engineering & Consulting Co., this little toy will cost you 1,890 yen (about $17). Wear it on your device, as a necklace or earring, or dangle it from your rear view mirror (but I’m not sure how much abuse it can take before it dislodges from the soil and makes you sad).

Okay, I did say almost. For most of us, it’s going to take a little more than a cartoonishly-bright mini fungus to ever make cleaning fun, but I’m glad that manufacturers Brando made the effort anyway.

Their battery-powered Mushroom Desk Mini Cleaner is designed to distinguish dust and can also be used as a lint remover for the lazy. Or it could just sit on your desk and look cute… It comes in red, orange, green or purple and costs just $12.
